Merle Haggard “Nearly Died” & You Will Never Believe Who Talked Him Into Getting Help

After missing an onslaught of December events and appearing to fall very ill friends, family and associates urged Merle Haggard to seek medical attention in fear that his cancer had relapsed. In fact, it wasn't until Gene Autry's widow, Jackie, pushed the issue home with him that he actually followed through and found a clear path to recovery.
“I guess I was nearly dead,” states this Country Music icon and Hall of Famer. “I had double pneumonia … they couldn’t tell whether I had cancer returned, or whether I just had pneumonia. They had to wait ’til they got the pneumonia under control before we could tell. So it’s been kind of a tough couple of weeks, but I’ve got so many people to thank.”
He's been in recovery after almost losing his life. But, the good news is that we won't have to say goodbye to such a great and talented singer-songwriter any time soon. If stubbornness would have won, we might have lost one of the great ones before the year was out. Thank the spirits of Country Music that he went to the hospital just in time.
“And if I hadn’t done that, I might not be here,” he notes. And, continues as he makes mention of Jackie, “We were up here doing a show, and I tried to go out, and I couldn’t do it, and she talked me into coming into this hospital and getting some help.”
Appearing on Willie's Roadhouse brought relief to fans all over the World — many of which grew up listening to this musical genius. Apologetic for his absence of shows this month, he thanked his fans for their love and prayers. He continued to show thanks to the Most High in appreciation for life.
“My wife and I both want to thank God for allowing me to have another Christmas,” Haggard adds with a laugh. “It looks like I’m gonna make it to one.”
It is our wish that he continues to have many Christmases hereafter. He has brought great passion and joy to our lives, and we aren't looking to see an “in memory of” event any time soon! Merry Christmas, Merle! May you and the wife have a great celebration and with much to celebrate!
What's your favorite memory of Merle? What songs can you most relate to?
