The life Billy Joe Shaver has lived would demoralize most people. His father left before he was born. Two fingers on his right hand were sheared off in a lumber mill accident. He worked dead end jobs. He lost both his mother and wife, Brenda, to cancer in 1999. His son, Eddy, died of a heroin overdose at the age of 38.
He's never quite reached household name status, but he is widely respected by both critics and fellow musicians alike. He has written songs for some of the greats in both country and rock music, including Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall, Allman Brothers and even Elvis and Johnny Cash.
But it is the songs recorded by Waylon Jennings for Honky Tonk Heroes that was Shaver's breakthrough. Recorded in 1973, this is considered the original “outlaw” music album. This album almost didn't happen.
The reason it was recorded is the real story… This will break your heart and make you smile at the same time.
