As Taste of Country reports, the couple weren't even sure they'd get to spend Christmas together. However, they've been determined to savor each day.

Still, they decided to keep positive, in a scenario Rory compares to The Gruffalo, their daughter Indiana’s favorite book and video. In the story, a mouse wandering through the forest makes up a creature called a Gruffalo in order to keep going when he encounters obstacles. He knows it isn’t real, but he convinces everyone he meets, and in the end, the Gruffalo actually turns out to be real.
“In early November, Christmas seemed still so far away. And the prognosis was clear that there was a good chance Joey wasn’t going to be with us then and that this Christmas was going to be a difficult one to get through,” Rory writes.
“So like the mouse in Indy’s story, we all began to ‘make up’ our own Gruffalo. Ours was the belief that it was going to be a wonderful, magical Christmas. We didn’t really believe it — down deep inside we knew we knew better — but still we told ourselves and each other that it was going to be great.
“And we trudged on through the deep dark wood,” he adds.
“And when we got to the other side, it turned out that our Gruffalo was real too.

Rory goes on to say that the best present was not only that Joey was still there, but that she was doing well. Aww! We love this story and we love these two. Their optimism is inspiring and we're just thankful that Joey keeps having special days that she and her family can cherish.
