Just a few decades ago, female country singers dominated the charts and gave women of all ages someone to look up to — as well as stories told from their perspective. In the last few years, however, it's primarily been men at the top of the country charts.
In fact, in 2015 just six songs from female artists made it onto Billboard’s year-end country radio airplay chart. Plus, in May, country radio consultant Keith Hill compared female country singers to tomatoes in the salad of country music, meaning men were the lettuce, or staple ingredient, and that ratings depended on having men on the charts.
His comments sparked a backlash, and incited a discussion about the role of women in country music.
