A genre tells the story of a legend, and Earl Scruggs is exemplified through Bluegrass and banjo-playing. The roaring 20s brought forth music, dance and a whole new culture we never seen before. But perhaps the best thing that came through the 20s was Scruggs, himself. In 1924, a legend was born. Growing up in a household of muscians, including a mother than played the organ and four siblings who also played the banjo, he was destined to perfect and master the banjo under his own design — his own technique.
Besides “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” Scrugg's signature song was the instrumental tune “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” The song was another success for Scruggs, who went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance, Duo or Group-Vocal or Instrumental in 1969 along with Flatt.
