PORTSMOUTH – The past year has been a good one for the Oak Ridge Boys. After more than four decades in the music business, the vocal group was finally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

“Ever since we found out that we were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, we've been trying to find adequate words to describe how special it is,” Richard Sterban, of the Oak Ridge Boys, said. “It really is a very special thing. Quite honestly, it is a big deal. No doubt about it. When you look at everybody who is in there, the fact that we are going to be a part of that is a tremendous honor.”

The franchise known as the Oak Ridge Boys began in the 1940s. After going through many different incarnations, the version of the group which has lasted these past 40-plus years came together in the 1970s and includes Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban.

In 1973, Sterban had a gig singing back-up for Elvis Presley. He joined the Oak Ridge Boys when the group needed a bass singer and was expanding its repertoire from gospel to a more mainstream sound.

Once the quartet was solidified, the hit songs came quickly. The group hit No. 1 on the country music charts 12 times, including with their well-known song “Elvira.”

Along with the Hall of Fame induction, the Oak Ridge Boys released a new album earlier this year that has the group going back to its gospel roots. The recording, “Rock of Ages – Hymns and Gospel Favorites,” was produced by Allen and Ben Isaacs and can be found at Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores in the Tri-State and around the country.

[They] think the group's sound has only gotten better with age, and that there are some days he still can't believe all the success is real.
