“I got real close to doing a song with Pitbull one time,” he said (Blake Shelton). “There's just something about me being like a middle America country artist saying the word motherf–ker over and over again. It was like, ‘Man, I just don't know if that's going to go over with my soccer moms.' So I opted not to, but I was honored.”
The fact that Pitbull asked Shelton to collaborate is not a shock — the Miami native has built an entire career on headline-making collaborations — but we are surprised that he and the country superstar, who has exploded into a household name thanks to his coaching gig on NBC's The Voice, couldn't find some common ground to make it happen.
Mixing hip-hop and country is not an entirely unprecedented move. Back in 2004, Nelly and Tim McGraw scored a surprise cross-over hit with “Over and Over.” Later, in 2013, the rapper performed on the CMT Music Awards stage with Florida Georgia Line on a remix of their song “Cruise.”
Still, as a fan of music in general I just can't help but think of the endless possibilities. Sort of like when Aerosmith and Run DMC broke down the genre barriers so many years ago. I guess we'll all just have to enjoy the musical gifts that Blake gives us now and keep dreaming!
