  • Country Music Star Receives Purple Heart From Thankful Veteran

A wounded warrior, Staff Sergeant Justin Patterson, awarded Brantley Gilbert his first Purple Heart for raising awareness about veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other issues that may arise from serving our country.

Patterson was so touched by Gilbert coming along for the ride and doing his part to help our nation's heroes that he decided to give him the priceless gift.  “What you are doing for us, you have no idea what that’s doing for us soldiers. I don’t know any other way to thank you,” Patterson said.

Staff Sgt. Patterson has served as a Sniper for the Army, working five tours of duty in Iraq.  The way he received his first purple heart, which he gave to Gilbert, is terrifying.

Patterson was riding with a small kill team of soldiers doing a “security overwatch in a Tier I hot spot.”  They waited for the enemy to present themselves, which they were then ordered to “eradicate the target.”  Before they were able to reach where their target was supposed to be, their vehicle hit a roadside bomb.  He does not remember much from the incident.  Staff Sgt. Justin Patterson received fragments to his face and fractures to his skull.  He did not want to go on with the details after sharing up to this point, as he was tearing up.

After the bombing incident, Patterson did not leave his house for two years.  He was crippled with PTSD.  It was his wife who encouraged him to go back to serving the Army as a veteran.  He really appreciated following through with rehabilitating himself and getting involved again.  He mentions that it's therapeutic, life-changing, and he is happy that the comradery and brotherhood is back in his life again.

This Army Staff Sergeant pulled an incredibly smart marketing move.  He claims to not have known Brantley Gilbert before their Project Odyssey ride, but knew that granting the music star with a purple heart will somehow make him want to get even more involved to thank him back.  The videos on this story have gone viral.  Staff Sgt. Justin Patterson has already been featured on the Fox News segment “Fox and Friends Weekend.”  This gesture was so heartwarming to Gilbert, that he decided to give his two seats to the 2015 CMT Music Award Show to this amazingly brave veteran.  What do you think of this honorable veteran's gesture?
