  • Country Stars Who Have Fought Addiction

I never knew some of these Country Music Superstars had a problem in the past. I am glad that they are all back on track!

    Randy Travis
For much of his career, Randy Travis maintained a squeaky clean image, but his story is actually one of salvation. He was a delinquent and high school dropout before his future wife, “Lib” Hatcher, took an interest in him professionally. That (and finding God) turned his life around… until they divorced. Since then, Travis has been arrested twice for drunken disturbances, cited one other time for simple assault and brought a messy he-said-she-said lawsuit against Hatcher.

    Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings admitted to having a $1,500 per day cocaine habit for much of his outlaw career. Many think the effects of the drugs followed him into sobriety and cut his life short in 2002 at the age of 64. In 1977, he was arrested for cocaine possession, but the charges were later dropped. Jennings sobered up for good after moving to Arizona in 1984.

    Joe Nichols
Joe Nichols says he hit rock bottom in January of 2005 during a music industry meet-and-greet. To keep up with the pressures of a country music career, as well as to deal with the loss of his father in 2002, he mixed amphetamines and alcohol. “Too much speed and I’d be all jacked up. Too much booze and I’d be dull. So I took enough of each to keep me going,” he told People in 2006. His troubles continued into 2007, and he tells Taste of Country that with the support of his wife, he gets through each day one at a time.

    Trace Adkins
Trace Adkins wrote openly about his 25-year battle with alcohol in a book called ‘Then They Do,’ named after his 2003 hit of the same name. He blamed the addiction for his failed marriages, jail time, drunk driving accidents and for getting shot by his ex-wife. He said he’d grown intolerable. He went to rehab on Christmas in 2002 and came out a new man. His personal and professional life have taken off since. “Things that happened in my daily life that would have made me go, ‘F— that, I’ll go and get drunk,’ now make me smile,” he says.

    Johnny Cash
Alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates… Johnny Cash was a walking pharmacy during much of his early professional life. He famously was caught at the Mexico boarder with 668 amphetamine tablets and 475 tranquilizers. Time and again he’d quit with the help of wife June Carter Cash and God, but time and again he’d find himself abusing drugs. The abuse no doubt shortened the lives of two great country music legends.

Do you think if you where in the lime-light for hours on end that you would use narcotics to make your nerves a little more at ease? Tell us your thoughts on this and if their actions are justifiable.
