The CMT Awards Show is not the most prestigious awards show, but it may be one of most fun ones. There are unexpected singing combos, new music plugs (and the occasional movie and/or TV plug) and Reba.
Meanwhile, here are some reasons any random country music awards show is better than the Oscars or the Emmys or the Tonys, even if you’re not a big country music buff:
They showcase a huge range of musical styles. Over the past few years, country music is a haven for the widest variety of genres, encompassing not just country but also hard rock, hip-hop, pop, and MOR easy-listening. Don’t think the pretty boys of Florida Georgia Line are “really country” but rather refugees from a bad dream the Eagles had in the ‘70s? Stick around for Kacey Musgraves, Reba McEntire — the latter will bring her authentic twang to the CMTs for the first time in ten years.
That not enough? Maybe you're not a huge fan of different musical styles; there's something for everyone!
There’s constant social commentary, controversy, and tension beneath the surface. You know how people get all upset when anyone makes a political statement at the Oscars? Well, heck, country stars don’t have to make statements — they let their music and their personas do that work for them. Take Maddie and Tae, who’ll appear on the CMTs and are still plugging their 2014 hit “Girl in a Country Song,” a spritely critique of so-called “bro-country” sexism. Indeed, Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Musgraves, Reba, and other women are engaged in a pitched battle to get more women played on country radio stations, those hidebound institutions of maleness.
Still not enough incentive? Did I mention Reba? Read on at Yahoo TV to see why you SHOULD be watching? Did you catch the Awards? Let us know what you thought by leaving a comment.
