  • Every Song Has a Story: Miranda Lambert’s Automatic

I will admit that this song seems to hit home now more than ever. In a day and age when the press of a button can get you virtually whatever your heart desires, it's nice to remember the times when things didn't come so quickly. There is something to be said for the taste of reward after having to work for it.

Written by Lambert, Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby, the nostalgic tune gave Lambert her highest-debuting single at that time (it debuted at No. 26 on the Billboard charts). “Automatic” also earned a host of awards nods, including ACM Single of the Year, CMA Song of the Year and others.

“Automatic” was actually a title … You know, any time I would write with Miranda, because I would only see her for a few days, I would always be like, “Oh my gosh, I’m gonna stockpile ideas and get ready” because I’d only have a few moments with her …

Nicolle Galyon and I, we were going to be writing with her, and she was like, “I’ve gotta call it “Automatic,”” and I was like, “Ah, that’s a really cool title!”

We were writing in her condo in downtown Nashville that day, and we were just being kind of nostalgic about stuff, but really we started talking about her old truck … I had never driven a stick shift, so I had no idea what she was talking about, but we were talking about that, and we were talking about all kind of stuff — how you used to have to have a map before you could go anywhere. So we started writing from this perspective …

And the rest is history. After Lambert recorded the track it was an instant hit with fans around the world. We were all drawn into her melody about simpler times and when life moved a little bit slower.

The song brings up memories for anyone who listens to it which isn't always a bad thing.
