  • Merle Haggard Honored in the U.S. House of Representatives

I wonder what Merle Haggard would have to say about this.

Known as an outlaw of the country music scene his name was brought up in the most unlikely of places…The U.S House of Representatives. While some may assume it would be a cautionary tale it was in fact quite the opposite. His name was spoken with honor and remembrance by Rep. Kevin McCarthy who represents Bakersfield in California’s 23rd district where they will be naming a post office after the iconic singer. Check out the moving tribute below.

“Mr. Speaker, you can take a look back on American history. You can see figures standing tall who spoke for the everyday working man. Following a long tradition of Whitman and Twain, Merle Haggard was a man who knew America instinctively, because he lived an American life. It wasn’t a life for the movies, but it was all more compelling, because it was all more real. That is the reason they called him the poet of the common man.”

These words resonate with anyone who has listened to and loved Merle Haggard for years. To this day his works touch the hearts and lives of anyone who listens. His words are timeless and his influence felt even now and for generations to come!
